Dental Implants in Las Vegas
If you’re missing one or more teeth and don’t think typical bridges or dentures would be right for you, then you may want to explore the possibility of dental implants.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that attach to your jaw and provide a base for replacement implant teeth that are crafted to match your natural teeth.
How do dental implants work?
Unlike removable dentures, dental implants offer a permanent fix to replace missing teeth. And unlike dental bridges, they don’t require you to whittle down teeth on either side of the gap to fit the crowns that support the bridge.
The process for placing dental implants consists of first implanting a small post in your jaw that functions as a root for your replacement teeth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the post and fixes it in your jaw. From there, an abutment, or connector post, is attached to provide a base for the new tooth. Then a crown that has been molded to fit your teeth is attached to the abutment and serves as your replacement tooth.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
Dental implants have the advantage over dentures in that they are permanent, stable parts of your mouth. You don’t have to take them in and out and they won’t move around while you eat or speak. Compared to dental bridges, dental implants also carry an advantage by not requiring the support of teeth on either side. With dental bridges, the teeth on either side of the gap are reduced in order to fit the crowns that serve as anchors for the bridge. With a dental implant, you won’t have to remove any pieces of the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
Dental implants also serve similar benefits to other tooth replacement strategies like bridges or dentures in their role of replacing your missing tooth or teeth. Having a full set of teeth makes it easier to eat and speak, as well as improving your smile and self-esteem. Replacing a missing tooth can also help with your overall oral health. It helps keep other teeth in place and reduce the possibility for infection in the empty space.
Types of dental implants
There are two main types of dental implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of implant and are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Subperiosteal implants are meanwhile placed on top of the jaw with posts that protrude through the gum to hold the replacement tooth.
Are dental implants right for you?
If you have one or more missing teeth and overall good oral health, a dental implant might be right for you. Implants require sufficient bone in the patient’s jaw to be able to support the implant. Healthy gums are also highly beneficial to ensuring the implant is successful.
